Gym Re-Opening Phase 1

Welcome back to SAC & HHF!

We’ve missed our tremendous members so much and can’t wait to see you all! I think we can all agree this is the most unique and challenging time in our country‘s recent history. I always look for silver linings and during this I have found many to hold onto and I hope you have as well.

“Reopening“

It’s not something most of us in the business world have done before and what a challenge it is! With the limitations placed upon us, it has been particularly challenging and as much as we just wanna bust out and say “We are back 100%!”, unfortunately at this time we are not able to. We sincerely want to thank all of our members for your loyalty and the many many messages and well wishes we have received throughout the few months that we’ve been closed. It has meant the world to us.

I look forward to getting the process of re-opening started. It is not the way I necessarily would’ve planned it, but I will be a good soldier and follow the guidelines the state has mandated.

Beginning June 1:

SAC & HHF will be staffed from 7am to 6pm M-Th and Sat 8am-12pm so that our ‘current members’ can visit us to discuss the following safety measures described below as well as the details of what WILL and WILL NOT be available to you during Phase 1 of our reopening. We will not be providing details or answering questions via social media or email so please visit us to find out more regarding the specifics of what is being allowed so we can help you better understand our ‘Old Normal with Adjustments’ as they are very specific and will be better explained in person. Additionally this gives us an opportunity to show you the modified layout of the facilities as well as the foot-traffic flow.

Personal Trainers will begin 1-on-1 training by appointment during the first week of June. Any member wishing to have a complimentary Personal Training Session with one of our many amazing Trainers can email info@hampsteadhealth.com or info@salemathleticclub.com to secure one of the limited sessions available.  These sessions will be filled on a first come first serve basis and will be a great opportunity to learn something new and get off on the right foot! . Our group exercise classes will remain virtual through Zoom for at least the first week of June before we launch our limited in-house class schedule. Silver Sneakers specifically will stay on Zoom until further notice.

June 8th is our target date to have some normalcy regarding workouts, pool etc. We can’t wait!

Things you need to know before entering SAC/HHF during our Phase 1 of reopening.

    1. All staff will be wearing masks while in the building. All staff have been trained using the CDC guidelines and are there to help you our valued members to adjust to the new procedures.
    2. You know HHF & SAC were ultra clean and sanitized prior to our temporary closure. Our high standards will continue indefinitely for our members continued safety and health.
    3. Members entering the building must first use the hand sanitizer dispensers in the vestibules before entering the lobby and must be wearing a face-covering when checking in. The face covering  may be removed once you leave the lobby to begin your workout.
    4. Every member will grab a personal spray bottle from the ‘sanitation table’ in the lobby to be used during their workouts to thoroughly wipe down all surfaces used PRIOR TO and IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING use.
    5. Additional ‘Sanitation Stations’ have been installed through the facilities and are well marked.
    6. There are blue arrows on the floor directing a flow of foot traffic but should be adhered to in every circumstance except in cases of emergency where we must exit the building.
    7. Locker rooms including showers will be open, saunas will be closed until further notice.
    8. Childcare will not be available until further notice.
    9. Per state mandate Racquetball will not be permitted during phase 1.
    10. The pool is available for single lane swimming by reservation only.
    11. Per state orders, no out of state residents can become ‘new members’  during Phase 1 but ‘current’ out of state members are allowed to return to the club.
    12. No members should enter the club that:
      1. Have any symptoms of Covid-19 or any other infectious illness.
      2. Have a temperature of 100.4 or greater.
      3. Has been in close contact in the last 14 days with ANY individual who has Covid-19.
      4. Has traveled in the past 14 days either internationally, by cruise ship, or by plane, train or bus outside of NH, VT or ME.
      5. Water fountains are disabled. Bring your own water or purchase from our cooler.
  1. Members should arrive ready to work out wearing exercise clothing and sneakers to minimize time spent in the facility.
  2. Towel service is temporarily suspended so please bring your own workout and bath towels.
  3. The club(s) will no longer provide yoga mats so please bring your own preferably with your name on it.
  4. Seating has been minimized and should be used by members only when absolutely necessary and disinfected after use by the member.
  5. We love to hear about your life and socialize with our members but this will have to wait a bit longer. So please, no loitering, workouts only at this time…. you know we love yah!
  6. No shakes will be made during Phase 1, only bottled and canned pre & post workout drinks can be purchased.
  7. The main entrance will be used for solely that, entering. All members exiting the building should use one of the two side doors, one by the cardio deck and the other through the abs room.
  8. We are not taking our enhanced rules and regulations lightly. Any member not following ANY of the safety measures we have put in place will be reminded/warned to follow policy. The second discussion will be the termination of membership and a 3 month ban from our two facilities.  We do not want to do this so PLEASE follow these important rules.

We so look forward to seeing you all soon!

A Message to our Valued Members

To our valued members,
from Owner & Operator of HHF & SAC, Ted Curtin.

This is a very trying time for most Americans and most of the world. My focus has primarily been on my local community and the community at Hampstead Health and Fitness and Salem Athletic Club. From the first day this virus looked like it may become a serious threat I had a meeting with a group of seniors at HHF to let them know that in order to protect them, the most vulnerable to this threat, we most likely would not be running silver sneakers classes the following week. That was on 3/13, and since that day this threat has consumed my thoughts, it has been my primary focus every waking moment trying to do what is best for our employees, our members and community. Many of you that know me personally know that I care greatly about our members and staff, many of you are like family to me and I have spent my career in the fitness industry working very hard to consistently make decisions that will best impact everyone. This period of time has been the biggest challenge of my life.

We closely followed government guidelines, expanded the frequency, thoroughness and effectiveness of our cleaning protocols which were already at a very high-level to keep everyone who came into our health clubs safe. We eliminated groups meeting at the clubs and went to live online classes exclusively. We kept a close eye on and managed the flow of members into the club based on state and federal guidelines. We enforced sanitization of everything members touched before and after use while in the club to minimize any exposure. The staff at both clubs are absolute superstars and I thank them all for that, the best of the best!

Last week I submitted an exemption request to be added to the ‘essential business’ list from the State of NH to stay open with restrictions but I was just notified that it was denied. My plea to the state was that HHF houses a Rehabilitation Facility as well as a Chiropractic Office, both deemed essential by the state and we serve many members of the community that find us ‘essential’ and we 1000% know we are essential to those members. Many are cardiac care patients, cancer patients, those struggling with depression, anxiety, and many use the gym to combat substance abuse issues, many just to relieve stress and feel normal. I feel that we could have stayed open in a very responsible way to serve those members so please accept my apology to the many I had discussions with regarding their personal struggles, I did everything I could.

I am disappointed to let you know that we will not re-open until the state decides, which at this point is slated for May 4th, I am hopeful that will be sooner.

What you need to know about your membership

Our membership billing was per usual submitted in March for April so expect a membership draft.

  1. If you are an EFT member (monthly billing) and we are closed for the entire month of April you will receive one month of not being billed and we are currently working on a process to manage this and will follow up asap.
  2. If we are closed for 2 weeks for example, you would be charged an adjusted prorated amount for May.
  3. If you have a paid in full membership you will not lose any time and the length of which we are closed will be added to the end of your current expiration date.
  4. If you are taking part in our live online classes while we are closed, your membership will function as normal. All instructors are being paid to teach their classes remotely and that will continue throughout the duration of our closure.
  5. If for some reason we are not able to reopen (which is very unlikely), any prepaid dues are refundable through a state required bond.
  6. If your current financial situation has been compromised let us know, your April payment can be refunded and your membership can be frozen for no charge until you can return to normalcy and to the club.
  7. If you are a recent short-term member that joined in March due to your regular fitness facility closing, your membership will be frozen to be used when we re-open or you can request a prorated refund.
  8. To be clear, every members situation is different and will be handled as such and no member is in jeopardy of losing any funds or any membership time.

WHEN THIS IS OVER, PLEASE SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES OTHERWISE YOUR CHOICES WILL BE LIMITED TO CORPORATE AMERICA, CORPORATE HEALTH CLUBS AND THE STORY OF DAVID VS. GOLIATH WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT ENDING.

Thanks to the several dozen members who offered to help in any way they could, the cards and emails we received in gratitude for doing our best during this time of uncertainty, I am blessed.

Hoping I covered it all but any questions or concerns should be emailed directly to me at tedcurtin@hampsteadhealth.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

In health and best wishes to you and your loved ones,
Ted Curtin

Coronavirus Update

HHF will remain open during these challenging times.

Some rules and guidelines to keep everyone healthy.

First off, HHF is widely recognized as a tremendously clean facility accomplished through our thorough daily practices to keep our members healthy. Since this current health concern, we have stepped up the frequency of ALL of our cleaning protocols.

With the senior population being at the highest risk, we will suspend Silver Sneakers classes until this has passed.

On Monday 3/16 we will not run any classes while we work to come up with a plan that we are comfortable with moving forward. As always, we consider our members and the communities health and wellness our top priority.

We ask that you use the “6 foot rule” which the CDC recommends to keep you and others safe.

I don’t think we have to cover in detail the importance of keeping your hands clean and sanitized, we have installed additional hand sanitizer throughout the facility.

We REQUIRE that you wipe ALL equipment BEFORE and AFTER including cardio, weight machines, dumbbells, barbells as well as any exercise equipment that you use. If you are not willing to do this, please don’t use the facility. We are doing our part we ask that you do yours.

If you’re not feeling well or are not healthy please do not visit the club until this has passed.

Stay tuned for daily updates.

Be safe, be well, stay active.

– Ted Curtin and the staff at HHF

WMUR-9 Viewers' Choice 2020: Best gym in NH

Looking back over 20 Years!

20 YEARS!

Hampstead Health & Fitness founders Susan & John Boutin opened the doors of HHF on Saturday November 6th 1999, Hampstead and the surrounding towns had their own health club! At that time gyms and health clubs were few and far between and found primarily in the larger towns or cities of the Merrimack Valley, the Greater Manchester area and the Seacoast. So it was a risky business venture to take over one of the largest commercial/retail buildings in lil’ old Hampstead — the old Custeau’s Market — and turn it into a relatively large health club! I can only imagine the sleepless nights wondering, “if we build it, will they come?” would come to fruition.

Well it did and the Boutin’s desire to create a community and family culture soon resulted in the need for expansion, so within one year they grew to the old ‘Pillbox’ side of the building expanding the kids’ areas of the club, adding a few tenants some that remain today including, Hampstead Sports and Rehab. Lifetime Chiropractic, and C. Melucci Salon & Spa.

In 2006 with a desire for more family time with their two young sons, the Boutin’s decided to sell their beloved gym, to me, Ted Curtin, their Personal Trainer of several years who teamed with Dr. Humberto Valdes, a client and friend of mine. Although I trained at other facilities, a few times per month I would visit HHF to train John and Susan. I loved their gym so when John mentioned to me they wanted to sell it on February 16th 2006 I replied, “consider it sold”. We took over operations of HHF 8 months to the day after on October 16, 2006.

Twenty years after opening its doors HHF remains the longest-running and strongest health club in the area with a staff that works very hard to deliver the best, cleanest, friendliest experience possible and an owner that is on site daily dedicated to HHF and its community.

HHF remains a strong small business in Hampstead surviving and thriving through the recession, the onslaught of chain gyms that surrounded little Hampstead as well as the boom of studio fitness. We are proud of what we have accomplished here in Hampstead, a community comprised of amazing people and we will work to be a pillar of the strength of the small business model in our area.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the support of HHF and small business in our community!

Member Spotlight: Marie Wormhood

Meet our Member of the Month Marie Wormhood!

Marie is a pleasure to have in the club, always positive, always working hard to be a better Marie! She has been training for around 12 months with her Trainer, Teesha. Teesha keeps her working hard by challenging Marie with each new session.

The results: significantly lowered blood pressure without the use of medication, mitigated heart-burn, lost a total of 53.4 POUNDS!!! And maybe most importantly, gained control over her food with portion control. In Marie’s words, “I took my life back!”.

We are proud to have Marie as a valued member here at HHF and wish her nothing but the best continuing to leading her healthy lifestyle! GO Marie!
